Ros Canter’s rise to the top of her sport reads like a Hollywood film script. She moved up to five-star level eventing in 2015 and just three years later was crowned World Champion.
The horse that took her there was All Star B, but he’s never been as easy ride and at 17.1hh he was certainly a challenge for the 5.2ft rider. Add to that, Ros’ fear of going fast on the cross-country and she doubted she would ever make it as a top event rider.
However, when British Eventing’s performance coach Chris Bartle stepped into help, everything fell into place. Together they developed a system to boost her confidence and within two years she had won team gold at the Europeans, and was crowned World Champion.
Despite not competing in the early part of 2019, due to falling pregnant, Ros attained World Number One status for the month of May. In July, she and partner Chris had their first baby, Ziggy Grace, and Ros returned to competition just one month later, posting some great international wins.
Ros began her riding career with the South Wold Hunt North Pony Club, but she only decided to pursue eventing full time, after attending Sheffield Hallam University, where she studied Sport Science.
Ros spent four years working for Judy Bradwell starting in 2008. During her first year there, she qualified three horses for the Burghley Young Event Horse Final and Young Horse Eventing Championships, and she earned a silver medal in showjumping at the World University Equestrian Championships.
Ros has remained a strong competitor in the young horse eventing classes ever since. She came in second in the Six-Year-Old World Championships at Le Lion d’Angers and won the Four-Year-Old Burghley Young Event Horse Final and the Lycetts Four-Year-Old Championship as well.
In 2022 after placing 2nd at Badminton aboard Lordships Graffalo, Ros was selected for the World Equestrian Games placing 4th as an individual. The following year Ros went one better and won Badminton on Lordships Graffalo followed by Europeans Individual and Team Gold medals! The winning streak continued with a win at Pau 5* on Izilot DHI. 2024 was just as successful with selection for Paris Olympics winning a team Gold medal, topping the FEI World Rankings and winning Burghley 5*L.
2025 has also been a magical start to the year winning Badminton 5*L on Walter and only 6 weeks later winning Luhmuhlen 5*L on Isaac.
