International Grand Prix Show Jumper
Harrie Smolders is a Dutch Olympic show jumping rider. He grew up with his parents and his sister in Lage-Mierde in Brabant and began riding at eight years old.
His father had always loved horses and encouraged his son’s riding career. Though he didn’t start his career as a bold rider, he still won multiple national titles in show jumping, dressage and eventing.
After he obtained his Havo certificate, Harrie moved to Meppel in Drente when he was 18.
For more than four years, he rode for former European champion Johan Heins and gained valuable experiencing training talented young horses.
In 2002, Harrie made the switch to the stable of Axel Verlooy rising quickly through senior ranks.
Harrie is currently based in Lage-Mierde with his partner Inge and two sons, Pim and Siep.
With the Verlooy family and his dedicated team, Harrie has gained tremendous international success in recent years and reached Longines FEI World No.1 in 2018 holding the position for eight months. His extensive career includes multiple CSI5* Grand Prix wins and podiums, competing in multiple European and World Championships, Olympic Games and World Cup Finals.
