Charles Owen Prepares For Another Exciting Pony Racing Finals

Monday 15th September 2014

As one of Charles Owen's longest running sponsorship, the Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals always brings lots of excitement to the Charles Owen Team. Ponies and jockeys have been racing all year to try and qualify for the coveted few spots in the Finals which are scheduled for 20th September at The Racecourse Newbury in Berkshire.

The anticipation is building for the finals as the current leading ponies, Push the Button (138cm) and Cudlic Verona (148cm), were the winners of the 2013 Charles Owen Pony Racing Finals with their jockeys and brothers, Sean and James Bowen piloting them to their respective wins. Will it be a repeat for Push the Button and Cudlic Verona or will new ponies come out on top?

The top 24 ponies that accumulated the most points throughout the 2014 Charles Owen Pony Racing Series qualified for the Finals with 12 competing in the 138 cm and 12 in the 148 cm. The Leading Ponies List is available on the Pony Racing Authority website here:

The 2014 Finals at Newbury will be run at 7 f for the 138 cm race and 9 f for the 148 cm race. Both races will take place on the round course and will not be run on the straight mile.

Charles Owen provides all of the jockeys racing in the Finals with a Charles Owen jockey skull of their choice, though most choose the APM, as worn by A.P. McCoy himself.

"Charles Owen has been an enthusiastic supporter of Pony Racing since 2005, and I look forward to cheering the jockeys on in the homestretch for the 9th consecutive year," said Roy Burek, Managing Director of Charles Owen & Co. "Charles Owen puts a major emphasis on safety and education and our sponsorship of the Pony Racing Series gives the company the ability to instill safe practices in jockeys from their earliest racing days. Thanks to the Pony Racing Authority for giving Charles Owen the opportunity to sponsor this wonderful Series once again."

About the Charles Owen Pony Racing Series

Pony Racing was formally introduced in Britain in 2004 with the aim of encouraging more young people to consider a career as a jockey. Since then, over 100 riders have graduated from Pony Racing and are now jockeys with many more also working within the horseracing industry. Pony Racing is for riders aged 9-15 and the PRA hosts races around the country for ponies and riders of all abilities - whether the jockeys are first timers or have years of experience.

The Charles Owen Pony Racing Series is the top echelon of the sport, taking place on Racecourses before or after professional racing, 138 cm (medium ponies) and 148 cm (large ponies) races are staged each time with Ponies and Riders having qualified to compete. Fast, furious and competitive, Charles Owen Pony Races can easily be mistaken for being "the real thing." They take place between April and October with points accumulated for The Finals, which is the pinnacle of the Pony Racing season.
