Cian O’Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland, and attended Belvedere College. He began hunting with his father at age 14 and started training with Gerry Mullins when he was 17. Cian rode in his first Nations Cup just two years later and has since represented Ireland more than 100 times. Highlights of his career including winning individual bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games and being a member of the Irish Nations Cup team that won that Aga Khan Trophy at the Dublin Horse Show that same year. He regularly competes on Nations Cup teams for Ireland.

Cian O’Connor and his wife Ruth Maybin have two children. He is currently based at his own Karlswood stables in County Meth, Ireland. He has become well known and sought after as a coach, and his team of dedicated riders also spend part of each year in Germany and Florida.
