A helmet is lined with microscopic bubble wrap. The bursting of the bubbles absorbs the impact. The hard shell spreads the area of contact over a much larger load bearing area. Helmets should be replaced after a blow to the head, especially if the wearer loses consciousness. The expected life span of a helmet for the average rider is five years.

A helmet that moves on the head significantly reduces the level of protection it is designed to offer. Look out for an Approved Retailer with a Hat Fitting Certificate. the body protector

The Charles Owen Body Protector is manufactured to BETA level 3. This is the highest level of protection that can be offered by a body protector. BETA 2000 is very similar to the ASTM standard. It came in to force in March 2000 and insists on annual re-testing which ensures that the quality and standard of the products consistently meets the standards it is given. Charles Owen body protectors also meet the ASTM F1937-98 standard, this is the most stringent standard in North America for impact clothing. Our body protectors are also made to EN13158:2000, this is the same as BETA 2000 but is not applicable to North America, however the BETA 2000 standard is. These standards mean that our body protectors can be worn all over the UK and USA.

Level 3 body protectors should prevent minor bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain, prevent a limited number of rib fractures and reduce soft tissue injuries. They do not protect the spine and therefore will not stop any spinal injuries that may occur.

The Charles Owen body protectors are made from light weight foam which is perforated so that air can travel freely around the body. It also has removable outer covers that can be washed if they get dirty. The impact absorbing foam moulds to the body to ensure the greatest comfort and fit. It offers protection without restricting movement or being obtrusive. The inside of the body protector is lined with Coolmax™ material. The Charles Owen body protector is available in 42 different colour combinations. (Standard colours are Black, Navy and Hunter Green)
